Diaper rash is so common that many people think it is normal for babies to develop rashes. While it is true that a large percentage of babies will develop a rash at some point, it is always a sign that something is not right. Some babies have more sensitive skin, so they are more prone to outbreaks. Even for these sensitive babies, there is much that can be done to reduce or eliminate the problem.
Diaper rash is often caused by prolonged contact with moisture or soiled diapers. In this case, more frequent changing will clear up the problem quickly. Babies should never be allowed to sit in a diaper for more than a couple of hours and should be changed immediately when wet or dirty. It can also help to wash babies diaper area with warm water at every change or after a dirty diaper. This removes irritants and helps skin to heal quickly.
Babies with food allergies commonly develop skin irritation as well. Watch for this when introducing solids and try backing off of a food until baby's skin heals. Introducing only one new food every 3-4 days can help to pinpoint any potential allergies.
In addition to keeping baby clean and dry, you may need to use a barrier cream of some kind. While there are many commercial creams on the market, you can also find more natural creams through many online baby stores. In addition, you can use very economical and effective ingredients from your kitchen. Olive oil and coconut oil are both simple and effective. Coconut oil is naturally antifungal - which can help if the source of the rash is a yeast infection. Yeast infections are common when skin is warm and moist for long periods. If you suspect a yeast infection, consult your doctor.
If the diaper rash persists for more than 3 days or if the skin is cracking or bleeding, be sure to check with your doctor. Sometimes skin infections can develop in a diaper rash.
Finally, you may need to change the type of diapers your baby wears. Some babies are allergic to the dyes and perfumes in disposble diapers. Cloth diapers are also much more breathable than plastic and paper diapers - as long as you avoid the old-fashioned vinyl diaper covers. Modern diaper covers are more breathable, washable, and longer-lasting. Changing to cloth diapers can often clear up baby's skin very quickly.
